Before the trophy goes to the taxidermist
The tag stays on
fill out the harvest tag in ballpoint pen and attach it to the ear; it stays until processed or prepared for mounting.
High-risk CWD parts
Once moved from the harvest site, these go to commercial trash, double-bagged, or to a cooperating processor or taxidermist: head (brain, tonsils, eyes, lymph nodes), spinal cord/backbone, spleen, upper canine teeth with soft tissue, any article with visible brain or spinal cord tissue, unfinished taxidermy mounts, brain-tanned hides.
Bear and elk first
A bear must be checked by PGC within 24 hours, and an elk taken to the Benezette check station within 24 hours, before either goes to the shop.
Records book
A typical whitetail needs 140 inches (firearm) to make the Pennsylvania Big Game Records book. Have it scored before the mount is finished.
